"De-extinction" is a term that incites controversy from the offset; the initial thought for many is along the lines of "is that possible?" Often immediately followed by "should that be possible?"
This seems to be the case with any new scientific concept: the mere mention of it throws up hundreds of questions, both scientific and ethical - is it needed? Will the benefits outweigh the cost? Has science gone too far? What will be the effect on the wider world? Some of these are redundant and based on people having incorrect or out of date information, but others do indeed hold value; myths must be debunked and valid concerns must be taken into account so that the de-extinction process may be as smooth as possible and carried out for all the right reasons. I hope to pose, discuss and propose answers to many of these moral and ethical questions, decide how much truth is in them, and gather the opinions of others on the subject. |
